Zuckerberg’s letter: the White House pressured Facebook

In August 2024 Mark Zuckerberg wrote to the House Judiciary Committee: Biden administration officials repeatedly pressured Facebook over Covid-19 content. The FBI warned of the Hunter Biden laptop story; Facebook "demoted" it. "In retrospect, we shouldn't have demoted the story."

Summary

The letter of 26 August 2024 to Chairman Jim Jordan contains two admissions: (1) in 2021 senior administration officials “pressured” Facebook over Covid moderation — “I believe the government pressure was wrong”; (2) in 2020 the FBI warned of a “potential Russian disinformation” operation and Facebook demoted the New York Post’s Hunter Biden story. Zuckerberg: “In retrospect, we shouldn’t have demoted the story.”

Debunking

False: “Zuckerberg admitted the government censored.” — Precisely: he said the government pressured and Facebook yielded. Whether that is legally “censorship” (state action) is exactly what Murthy v. Missouri left unresolved — the Court dismissed the challenge on standing grounds.
